1. In some cases, it may not be possible for the sexually abused client to view the male therapist as sexually nonthreatening, in light of prior experience. Especially for female clients, this may mean that—as we generally suggest—the preferable therapist will be a woman if the original perpetrator was a man (Briere, 1996a). This will vary from case to case, however, and client preference should be given great weight in this regard.
